The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre — known as The Joan — is located at 597 High Street in central Penrith. Opened in 1988 and managed by the City of Penrith, The Joan is a critical node on the NSW Western Sydney touring circuit, presenting work to communities across the Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury, and Penrith regions.
The venue operates two primary performance spaces: the Joan Sutherland Theatre (575 seats, proscenium format) and The Studio (approximately 200 seats, flexible). The Joan Sutherland Theatre has a full counterweight flying system, adequate wing space for mid-scale touring productions, and a loading dock on Belmore Street that can accommodate standard touring trucks.
For touring productions, The Joan represents the western limit of the Greater Sydney metropolitan touring circuit before productions head further into regional NSW. The venue frequently presents work from Sydney-based companies including Belvoir, Sydney Theatre Company, and national touring productions from Playing Australia and Create NSW. The production team is experienced and approachable — early communication with the Technical Director is strongly recommended.
