The Capitol Theatre is a heritage-listed venue at 13 Campbell Street, Haymarket, and Sydney's largest proscenium theatre. Originally opened in 1928 as a cinema-theatre, the Capitol's current form reflects a major restoration completed in 1995. The auditorium features an ornate Baroque Revival interior, three-level seating configuration, and one of Sydney's largest stage houses — making it the preferred venue for large-scale touring Broadway productions and international musicals.
The stage house is a full counterweight flying system with a 19.4-metre grid height and 18 hemp sets plus 60 counterweight sets. The proscenium opening is 14.4 metres wide and 8.2 metres high — generous enough for the largest touring Broadway shows. The orchestra pit accommodates a 45-piece orchestra on hydraulic risers. The wing space, while not expansive by international touring standards, is workable for most shows through careful pre-production scheduling.
For touring productions, the Capitol offers the highest technical standard available in a heritage Sydney theatre — an in-house rigging and technical team, a resident production manager who works directly with incoming touring productions, and stage-level dock access from Campbell Street.
