The Sydney Opera House is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed performing arts complex on the shores of Sydney Harbour. Designed by Jørn Utzon and opened in 1973, the venue hosts opera, ballet, drama, contemporary music, comedy, and major international productions across five primary performance spaces. For touring productions, the Concert Hall and Joan Sutherland Theatre are the primary large-scale venues, while the Drama Theatre and Playhouse suit mid-scale works. The intimate Studio space suits contemporary and experimental forms.
The Joan Sutherland Theatre (formerly the Opera Theatre) is the primary proscenium stage, seating 1,507 with a full counterweight flying system, two-level orchestra pit, and fly tower clearing 26 metres above the stage floor. The Concert Hall seats 2,679 and features a world-class acoustic design; it is primarily used for amplified and classical music but can accommodate theatrical productions with rigging from the reflector array. The Drama Theatre offers a flexible proscenium configuration seating 544, while the Playhouse seats 398 in a traditional end-stage format.
