The State Theatre at 49 Market Street, Sydney, is one of Australia's finest surviving examples of the atmospheric theatre movement of the 1920s. Opened in 1929, the building is classified by the National Trust of Australia (NSW) and listed on the NSW State Heritage Register. Its ornate Gothic Revival interior — stone columns, chandeliers, marble foyer, and a 20,000-piece chandelier — makes it one of Sydney's most distinctive event venues.
The auditorium seats approximately 2,000 across stalls, circle, and upper circle. The stage, while not a full fly tower, features a large proscenium opening and functional counterweight system capable of handling standard touring productions. The theatre is notably used for the Sydney Film Festival, live concerts, and theatrical events.
For touring productions, the State Theatre's heritage requirements demand careful pre-production coordination with the production manager regarding rigging, load-in, and floor protection. The dock on Market Street accommodates standard trucks but height restrictions apply.
