Following up from our Covid-19 Survival Guide forum in April, Critical Stages Touring is hosting our next Indy Theatre Forum on Creative Practice in the Digital Environment.
This one will be a little different. Shaped from feedback and suggestions from artists around the country this next zoom-enabled forum will recap the things we’ve learned so far about theatre in isolation, before we settle in to hear from arts makers and leaders about how they’re managing creative practice right now.
We’ll also be devoting time to some practical tools and resources that can help you with your digital creative activities.

We’re taking the Indy Theatre Forum online – and truly national!
It’s been a weird, weird time. The events of 2020 have left many of us in unstable and uncertain situations, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and our communities continue to rise to the challenge that is Covid. And now it’s time to share how we’re all doing, what’s happening and where the potential is.
Join us on Monday April 20th via Zoom for our first Indy Theatre Forum of 2020 – Independent Theatre Practice during COVID-19 – A Survival Guide.
Hear from industry experts, independent artists and producers about how they’ve been managing the new normal in their world. From managing teams remotely and navigating streaming technology, to keeping work in development even when we don’t know when a stage will be available again, this is a chance for us to unpack the first vital lessons from the crisis.
We expect the forum to go for an hour but the zoom room will be open longer should questions need to be asked, and so we can socialise a little after. So bring snacks and a bevvy and it will almost feel like 2019.
Forum Special Guests
Esther Anatolitis fosters local, regional, national and international perspectives on contemporary arts issues as one of the nation’s leading advocates for the arts. Esther is a tireless arts leader who is at the coalface of the creative arts’ response during the crisis in her role as Executive Director of the National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA). Esther is the former Executive Director of Regional Arts Victoria and the CEO of Melbourne Fringe.
Amy Ingram is a performer, producer, writer and co-founder of Queensland’s award-winning theatre company The Good Room, and co-creator of their current body of work including I Should Have Drunk More Champagne, I Want To Know What Love Is; I Just Came To Say Goodbye and I’ve Been Meaning To Ask You. Amy used to split her work between New York and Sydney, and most recently co-founded Myths Made Here to produce and perform in the premiere production of Matthew Whittet’s Cinderella at QPAC.
Michaela Burger is a Melbourne-based independent writer, performer and producer. Her critically-acclaimed biographical cabaret A Migrant’s Son was slated for national tour in 2020 with Critical Stages. A recipient of the Adelaide Fringe Frank Ford Award, and a Helpmann Award nominee in 2016 and 2019, Michaela has toured sell-out shows across Australia, NZ and the UK, and has performed with leading theatre companies including Malthouse Theatre, Windmill, Southbank London, and the State Theatre Co of SA. Michaela is one of the first indy producers to embrace monetised streaming opportunities for regular broadcasts of her work via www.michaelaburger.live.
